Why ceramic coating over sealants?

Ceramic coatings are a liquid polymer that, when applied to a surface, creates a semi-permanent, protective layer.   It is used as a replacement/upgrade over conventional stone sealants.  Fine stone and granite that has been coated with ceramic coating  provides a layer that is significantly more robust than a traditional sealant.  Ceramic coating is also food safe and antibacterial reducing food born bacteria from spreading on any hard surface.

  • Extreme Heat Resistance: Ceramic coatings offer superior heat resistance. Many formulations can withstand temperatures ranging from -50°F up to 1,400°F.  This means a hot pan placed on the counter is far less likely to cause damage, a significant advantage over traditional sealants which have minimal heat resistance.
  • Exceptional Hardness and Durability: The hardness of a ceramic coating is often measured on the pencil hardness scale. Many high-quality ceramic coatings have a hardness rating of 9H or even 10H,  which indicates a very high resistance to scratching from everyday objects. For comparison, a traditional acrylic sealant has a much lower hardness and offers minimal protection against scratches.
  • Superior Stain Resistance: The non-porous, hydrophobic (water-repelling), and oleophobic (oil-repelling) nature of ceramic coatings makes them highly resistant to a wide variety of stains. This includes common culprits like:
    • Coffee and Red Wine: These will bead up on the surface and can be easily wiped away without leaving a trace.
    • Oils and Greases: These will not penetrate the surface, preventing unsightly oil stains.
    • Acidic Substances: The coating provides a barrier against etching from substances like lemon juice and vinegar.
  • Longevity and Cost-Effectiveness: A professionally applied ceramic coating can last for 5 years or more with proper care. This will drastically save you money over time.  Especially when you realize that having to have a stone restoration performed is inevitable
  • UV Protection: Ceramic coatings offer excellent UV protection, preventing the fading and discoloration of your stone surfaces, especially important for counter tops near windows that receive direct sunlight.
  • Enhanced Appearance: Ceramic coatings create a deeper, richer look for your stone, enhancing its natural color and pattern with a high-gloss finish. The coating is also very thin, so it doesn't create a "plastic" look like some topical sealants can.  You also do not lose the feel of the stone that PPF and other films will remove.

Traditional stone sealants are typically made of polymers like acrylic or wax and work by either forming a film on the surface or penetrating the pores of the stone. Much like automobiles, acrylic and waxes will provide protection, but not for as long as the cost should suggest.

  • Limited Heat Resistance: Most traditional sealants offer very little heat resistance and can be damaged by temperatures as low as 150°F to 200°F. This means a hot pan can easily melt or discolor the sealant.
  • Minimal Hardness: The hardness of a traditional sealant is very low, offering little to no protection against scratches.  This is maximizes when the surface is warm, even by just a little.
  • Frequent Reapplication: As mentioned, these sealants need to be reapplied every 6 to 12 months, creating a recurring maintenance task and cost.
  • Vulnerability to Chemicals: Traditional sealants can be easily damaged by harsh cleaning chemicals and acidic substances.

While regular stone sealants offer a basic level of protection, ceramic coatings provide a quantifiable and significant upgrade in every aspect of performance, from heat and scratch resistance to longevity and ease of maintenance.

Granite, Marble & Quartz Restoration Process

Diagnose

Strip/Resurface/Polish

Strip/Resurface/Polish

Initial diagnosis starts with determining what mesures are need to bring back the surfaced original luster and shine.

Strip/Resurface/Polish

Next, dependent on the surface's diagnosis, we will strip and polish the surface to its desired gloss. This process is the most intensive as it will remove all impurities except cracks and chips which use a different stone restoration process.

Coat and Set

The final Step is the ceramic coating where our technician  will apply the coating to the surface.  There will be a curing time of 24 hr before the surface is ready for use.
